Reduce your risk of electrical home fires during the holiday season 

Decorative lighting is one of the leading causes of holiday home fires. Take these steps to help keep your home safe from electrical risks and read more seasonal advice from our Risk Managers >

Inspect decorations

Check that all the wires and bulbs are in good condition and that no bulbs are missing. 

Don’t overload outlets

Use a power strip with a built-in circuit breaker and make sure that extension cords are UL-approved. 

Remember to unplug lights

Always unplug lights overnight or when you are away from home, especially if the lights are in contact with live decorations.

The risk of water damage is amplified during the winter months, especially for those in cold weather states. Last year, one winter storm resulted in more than $26 million in damage across the membership, the vast majority of which was related to burst pipes.
