Renting a Car? How Your PURE Auto Policy Applies
When the rental car agent starts asking about insurance, it can be hard to know what you actually need—but your PURE policy may already have you covered. Here’s how your PURE coverage works when renting a car, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Coverage basics
All rental cars come with legally required minimum liability coverage, depending on the country or state. Once those minimums are met, your PURE policy adds extra protection on top of what the rental car company provides for up to 90 days. You can also check with your credit card provider, as some may offer additional rental car coverage, both in and out of the U.S.
Liability coverage protects against damage or injury you cause to others.
Collision coverage protects against damage to the rental car itself.
Coverage in the U.S. and abroad
In the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada
Once the legally required minimum liability coverage is met, your PURE policy will generally extend to rental vehicles.
- If your PURE policy doesn’t include collision coverage, it won’t apply to the rental either—unless you're renting in New York. In that case, collision coverage is automatically included, even if it’s not on your PURE policy.
In Europe
Most European rentals include liability coverage, but often exclude collision protection. Many companies require you to purchase a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW).
Once you’ve secured that required coverage, your PURE policy may respond to covered damages that exceed the limits of the waiver.
In Mexico
Mexico requires all drivers to have proof of liability insurance specifically from an insurance company licensed in Mexico. This liability insurance is typically included in the cost of your rental, but be sure to ask the rental company to provide proof of coverage that you can keep with you while driving. In case of an accident, your PURE coverage may apply for any necessary additional liability and collision protection.
Important: Without the proper proof of insurance, drivers can be detained until damages are paid—so reviewing your rental agreement is essential.
Optional coverages offered by rental companies
- CDW/LDW: Waives your financial responsibility for vehicle damage or theft.
- Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI): Adds liability protection beyond legal minimums.
- Personal Accident Insurance: Covers medical costs for you and passengers.
- Personal Effects Coverage: Covers theft of belongings from the rental vehicle.
Do you need to purchase additional coverage?
Often, no. Your PURE auto policy may provide the coverage you need—depending on your destination, the rental terms and your policy’s specifics.
However, in some countries (especially in Europe or Latin America), local laws or rental companies may require you to purchase CDW or other protections for your policy to apply. Be sure to:
- Confirm what coverages are included in your rental.
- Review the specific requirements of the country.
- Contact your broker with any questions before you travel.
